I believe they would have a shot at both. They are six back in the division and have six to play with the Red Sox and that might be their best chance.

As a Yankee fan, I wanna try to give as unbiased an opinion as possible. The Yankees have been doing exactly what they need to be doing, beating up on the bad teams. The Red Sox seem to falter a little bit in August for the past couple years, so winning the division isn't impossible, just hard.
Even winning the wildcard could be a struggle. The Indians have one of the best offenses in baseball, the Twins and their pitching usually come alive late in the season, and with the way the Mariners are playing they could put up a challenge.
I think right now the Yanks have about a 40% chance of making the playoffs, probably as a wildcard.

If you read the standings this morning, the Yankees are only 6 1/2 behind the Red Sox and 4 1/2 games back of Cleveland in the Wild Card. The Yankees go head to head with Boston 6 times down the stretch and if Boston struggles, this could get very interesting. Keep the Faith because I see Boston doing a great impression of the 1978 Red Sox and choking again

at the beginning of the season, the yankee's fell so far behind because they were doing poorly, that's how the red sox got so far ahead (they played awesomely in the begginning, but they never would have gotten so far ahead if the yankees did well too.) now that the yankees are warming up a bit, even though it's against bad teams, I think the red sox will be the determining factor in who wins the division. Whether or not the yankees keep winning, the red sox need to keep winning too, to keep them at the top.

Your only chance of seeing the post-season is to sneak into the Wild-Card picture. The BoSox are struggling right now, but they're getting back on track and they are too dominant to give up another 6.5 games by the end of the season. The Indians are beatable to some extent and I think the Twins just don't have the complete package to the point where they can overpower the Yankees or Tribe in a hunt for that playoff spot.
My predictions for the playoffs are Red Sox (East), Tigers (Central), Angels (West), Indians (W.C.)
Sorry but your Yankees aren't the same this year.

I want the Yankees to win the division, but I think that they will make it through by the wild card. The Yankees have been doing very well, though. If they keep their winning streak going, then they have a real shot at winning the division.

Boston is 12-13 in their last 25 games. They lost 2 out of 3 to the KC Royals (who the Yankees are currently spanking). If Lester can stay healthy and Curt Schilling can STFU and pitch, Boston has a chance at the Wild Card.
Yankees have the division. Money in the bank.

I'm still not convinced the Yankees will make the playoffs. Coming out of the All-Star break the Yankees had a stretch where they were going to play 21 straight games against teams under .500. they are currently in the middle of this stretch so they are doing what they should be, beating up on sub par teams. I'll examine the Yankees again once this cupcake schedule is out of the way.

i can't are anticipating this, yet I say Angels win, the Angels have a winning checklist against the Yankees lifetime, yet who knows, in line with threat the Yankees can pull some thing off and clinch a playoff spot.

Seriously, do you think George Steinbrenner would enjoy his team being a "wild card"? That would mean the yankees are 2nd to Boston, no matter if they did end up beating Boston in the ALCS (which, btw isnt going to happen at all this year or next year, or the year aftre that, or even the year after that).
Can you imagine the horror of the yankees being a 2nd place team to Boston? I can! And I'll loving every minute of it!!!
Anyhows, the yankees dont stand a chance for the wild card(Cleveland has that spot wrapped up)---let alone the division. It doesnt matter if they were only 1 game out and 160 games left to play.
NOTE TO ALL YANKEE FANS:
the yankees are toast. done. finite. caput. finished. over. see ya. bye bye.
GET USED TO IT!

If they get in at all it will be Wild Card...I still say Boston takes the East and the Wild Card comes out of the Central...although you can't count out the Mariners for the Wild Card either.
