Martin was a very effective manager for short tenures. He would show up, crack the whip, kick butt, and get everyone up and running. But his style earned him little interpersonal grace, and wore thin quite quickly. Once players stopped responding to his managerial approach, or he rode his good players to exhaustion, or everyone simply aged past their primes (he was good with veteran squads, not much for kids), that'd be his Waterloo, and the party would end.

Can't say for mean, but he was certainly competitive and combative. That burns out people relatively quickly.

billy martin was a gret manager who expected his players to perform to their best every night. he inspired them to be winners and even inspired some of their management styles (lou pinella). my favorite martin antic was when he gave the photographer the finger while his topps basbeall card picture was being taken. has anyone noticed that after the bronx is burning reggie has an excuse for everything or a "that never happend" hes a jack a$$

He wasn't mean but he was Casey Stengel's type of player and wanted his players to play the same way he did. Billy was a Yankee through and through and was why George hired and fired him on several occasions over the years. Keep in mind, Billy was a drinker which led to the crash that killed him.

no, he was a great manager. Reggie Jackson was an *** who thought the whole world revolved around him and the whole team was about him. Billy Martin did his job, and he did it well. he respected being a yankee, he knew what it ment be one. he never wanted to wear anything else but pinstripes. reggie jackson was an asshole who only cared about him self.

hope this helps :)

Much too much alcohol and a bad temper don't mix very well and that was Martin's problem. Yes, it would be accurate to say he had a mean streak.
