vinca (periwinkle) is a good one... it's an evergreen. You might also consider ajuga.. both are pretty. I have seen liriope and mondo grass used as groundcovers very effectively as well.

spread mulch after planting to help retain moisture and add to soil quality as it breaks down.

Vinca is just about the easiest and quickest to cover. It doesn't care about soil or even sun. I have vinca growing in sun and full shade. However, vinca can be invasive and will end up where you don't want it. The good thing is that it is very shallow rooted and can be pulled out easily.

vinca is an excellent choice. i would also suggest creeping jenny, star jasmine, asian jasmine, yellow archangel, dead nettle, sweet violet.
