I'm trying to prepare for a 5K. I'm in great physical shape with the exception of my lower back. Right after the first mile my lower back really tightens up. If my lower back doesn't tighten up, I'm in a great situation in terms of performance..

What do you think are the causes of this? What can I do to prevent this?

I've had this problem in high school and gave up cross country and tried to slowly build up but no matter what it tightens up

Check you posture. You might not be in a relaxed state.

Try chiropractic. Studies by major medical journals have shown that chiropractors can treat back problems better tah MDs. But get a recommendation from a friend. Some chiropractors are good, effective professionals, and some are real quacks.

US ARMY here.- you might be running too straight up and not leaning forward. Your shoes might be worn-out-get new running shoes every 2-3 months if you are running marathons-even sooner. and you may need a different shoe. I ran Saucony, they had a great rocking foot-bed that really propels you forward and a great "heavy hitting" grid model. I ran 3-5 miles a day and 10miles every Sunday in the Army-ZERO injury. luck too!
