Make sure your wireless detector on you computer is turned on. Secondly, if you wireless network is secured you're gonna need the network key and password. the network key and password are found on the router. hope that helps.

First is it you wireless network or are you trying to hack into another wireless. If you are trying to hack in the wireless network manager has enabled security and kept you out which he should.

If it is your wireless network, first make sure you have configured properly for wired network. This has to work first. Also whenever configuring a wireless access point use a wired connection.

Follow the router manual connection on configuring the WAN port for a dynamic WAN IP or PPPoE configuration as your ISP has directed you. Once this is done, configure LAN ports of router to provide LAN IP via DHCP.

Once you have confirmed wired connection works then you should set up wireless per the router's manual direction. Enable security using WPA2 if available, WPA if WPA2 is not available, WEP if WPA not available. If WPA2 or WPA is used, create a preshare key of at least 12 characters. Record preshare key and security you used as you will need it. Enable MAC address validation and record the MAC addresses of the wireless port of each pc you wish to connect via wireless in the router's MAC address section. (If you are unsure of the MAC addresses, go to each pc you want to connect wirelessly, open command prompt [start, run - type in cmd and hit enter] and type in "ipconfig /all" without the quotes and hit enter; you will see all the network ports; select wireless port and note the MAC address which is called physical address in command prompt; MAC addresses are 12 characters long and often a : separates each pair of characters). Change ssid as directed in router manual.

No go to each pc you want to access via wireless. Config each wirless connection with the encryption, preshare key, etc and you should be successful. Follow manual directions on config of the wireless port on each pc.

make sure your router is setup to do wireless. on my linksys router, i have to specifically check a box to allow wireless.

If your router *is* set up to do wireless, make sure your laptop (I presume) is being allocated an IP address. Check your DHCP settings on your router (DHCP is the feature of your router that will hand out address to all devices behind the router).

If you have an ethernet cable, plug directly into the router to see if you can reach the internet that way.

Also make sure that your wireless modem on your laptop is enabled by going to control panel, network connections. If it's not enabled, then enable it.

Good luck!

I live in a rural area too. So I have to use the system that uses the phone line. My new Vista computer dose not have a modem in it. So I had to buy one and put it in. USR5699B or USR5610C. I got the second one. It worked great at first, but now I can't get connected with my new computer. I'm trying to get hold of the company to find out why.
If someone tells you why please tell me.

Make sure that your computer is set to the same Workgroup as the rest of the computers on the network. Go to Control Panel, then System. From there, you should be able to change the name of your workgroup.
