This question appears regularly in the question file, so let's take a shot at it.

In nature, living things evolve through changes in their DNA. In an animal like a chicken, DNA from a male sperm cell and a female ovum meet and combine to form a zygote -- the first cell of a new baby chicken. This first cell divides innumerable times to form all of the cells of the complete animal. In any animal, every cell contains exactly the same DNA, and that DNA comes from the zygote.

Chickens evolved from non-chickens through small changes caused by the mixing of male and female DNA or by mutations to the DNA that produced the zygote. These changes and mutations only have an effect at the point where a new zygote is created. That is, two non-chickens mated and the DNA in their new zygote contained the mutation(s) that produced the first true chicken. That one zygote cell divided to produce the first true chicken.

Prior to that first true chicken zygote, there were only non-chickens. The zygote cell is the only place where DNA mutations could produce a new animal, and the zygote cell is housed in the chicken's egg. So, the egg must have come first.

If the theory of evolution holds water -the chicken. The first chicken was an aberration where the child was different from the parent species. So the first chicken hatched from a non chicken egg.

If the bible holds true -the chicken. God created all creatures and so with the exception of human 'tampering" the first chicken in existence was exactly the same as the oldest "species" of chicken seen today.

The solipsist answer - Both the chicken an the egg are figments of your imagination. If you concentrate harder you might even come up with something useful.

There once was a quiz game between Jesus and Buddha to settle out who has more brains. Without fail, they answered each other question promptly. It has been going on for a long long time and still there is no clear winner. Finally Jesus ask Buddha this question: Which one came first, the Chicken or the Egg? At that point of time, Buddha excuse himself to take a leak. Have not hear from him ever since.....................

In my opinion, the Chicken came first. My reason? Hold on!

And God said, Let the water bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and FOWL that may FLY above the earth... And God created...every WINGED FOWL after his kind: and God saw that it was good. [Genesis 1:20,21]

God created the birth/chicken first and equipped it with all that it takes to repoduce its kind.

Egg came later!
