Simple --- they don't. Just paint in whatever you want to see there and voila -- photographic evidence.

Hiding things from people, I can understand. However, I highly doubt NASA actually does airbrush photos. Sure, if a big 'ol UFO was found on a slide, they'd probably airbrush it out but consider how many fringe lunatics there are.
Why even bother airbrushing? Most of the "evidence" of structures on the Moon or other planets are people's imaginations. They see a blurry, low-res photo from thousands of miles above and highlight it. It's no different from the power of suggestion.
Fact of the matter is, even if there was real evidence in a NASA slide, skeptics won't believe that easily and it'll be denied.

Someone is feeding you false data.
I see a lot of these photos, sometimes downlinked live, sometimes straight from the photo lab (although most of it is digital anymore), and there is NO "air brushing". Some stuff has the colors edited so that features that would not otherwise be visible can be seen, but usually they are very open about just what they did to the color balance. The photos would be useless to scientists if they didn't.
It would be cool if there was a lot of evidence of an alien civilization, but nobody's found any yet. Think about it...if NASA could find something like that for real and prove it, their budget would triple overnight.

There's a scientific explanation for all of that. The Photos? [I don't know] Probably, deep space imaging relies more on colorless images for contrast and basic uncertainty. The electronics return the more precise numeric data which is correlated in post-processing to the earth bound color scale. This would provide a more accurate color trace. Considering out-liers in numeric data is like considering a 1/2 mile reflection from some natural mirror. The combined effect in post-processing images could be a muddled, pixelated image.

They don't do it. This is just another foolish conspiracy theory. Your allegations, both of NASA airbrushing photos and of the existence of little green men, are completely baseless. People look up at the sky, see a bright star or a plane, and allow their imaginations to run wild.
If NASA was doctoring images, don't you think that it would be scientists who would realize it? Instead, scientists are the very first to defend NASA's imagery.
You say Mars isn't red? Do yourself a favor and look at it through a telescope, as I have. I can assure you that it is quite red.

The answer to these questions can be found in a book written by Carl Sagan. It's called "The Demon Haunted World." I highly suggest that all UFO theorists, amateur and professional alike, give it a read, maybe even read it twice.
That being said NASA has never, and I emphasize that word, been known to alter photos that they did not admit to. Sometimes photos do need to be altered to enhance particular portions, such as with false-color images. But these images are not airbrushed. If NASA did find something of merit they would likely investigate the source, and pass the information on to the public. So before you become fanatical of UFO's and other such conspiracies be sure to check both sides of the story, and be sure to read Carl Sagan's book.

They don't deny Area 51 anymore. They do deny they ever called it that, which is probably a lie. Much of whatever went on there in the 1970's has been moved or dismantled. The list of EPA toxic waste disposal violations is longer than that of the city I live in.
Can you give an example of the airbrushing you're talking about?

What? What structures? Are you referring to the clearly non-existent "face" and "pyramids" on Mars? The only pictures that they were visible in were low-res pictures from Viking and Mariner. Newer, very high-re pics show them for what they are: hills and valleys that were in shadow, giving the illusion of regular geometry.
There has never been any real evidence for extraterrestrials. The stories you hear are STORIES, not fact.
Area 51 does indeed exist, and is a flight test range for secret military aircraft. That's all. There are no "saucers" or "alien technology".
Stop looking for conspiracies that don't exist and learn to appreciate the beauty of science and the real world.

Why do people fixated on conspiracy theories believe unfounded allegations? It's easier to insert images into photos than to take them out. And there are enough photo experts around who could pinpoint airbrushed photos that NASA would be foolhardy to attempt it.
They deny their existence because that is the truth.
