The Little Willie was invented in the USA around 1900. They were meant to be morbid pokes at society’s ills. My example is similar to ones from “Ruthless Rhymes for Heartless Homes” by Col. D. Streamer, 1902.

Paper-hanger

Poetry, little bits of our souls splashed,
I’m posting it, knowing, it will be smashed,
I hope that your heart can show pity,
Please do no spit on my cute little ditty.

The point of the exercise is for you do go write one, if you care to play along. You may also comment, throw tomatoes or act smug and superior, as below...

And your point is?

Society's ills you say.
My God, I'll be here all day!
But I have clothes to wash and a workout to grab
I don't have time to sit here and gab.

Little Willie was conceived as "Billy" in 1902 and has run rampant ever since. In that year, Harry Graham (under the name of Col. D. Streamer) published Ruthless Rhymes for Heartless Homes. Amongst many better verses was a mordant little quatrain, "Tender Heartedness":

Original Version:

Billy, in one of his nice new sashes
Fell in the fire and was burnt to ashes;
Now, although the room grows chilly,
I haven’t the heart to poke poor Billy.

Indignant folks get in a huff
When life starts getting over-tough.
Why rise up? Just stoke the flame
by finding someone else to blame.
