James C is correct...multiplication is done before addition and subtraction the answer is indeed -9/8 (or -1.125 ).
(watunoabtmwah is wrong, -7/2 x 7/4 is never -2.)
Take an easier example..10 - 2 x 4 + 3
This would be 10 - 8 + 3 = 5.

well u have got it wrong already.. its BIDMAS not BODMAS..
these letter help u remember wat to calculate first in a sum like the one u have..
however the B starts for brackets so you put brackets in the questuion..
e.g>> 5/2( - 7/2 X 7/4 )+ 10/4
this is because the M starts first and its a multiplication.
so u calculate the brackets..
which -2 is the answer for that bracket
then you write out wat the question agsin to finish the question
5/2 {(- 2) + 10/7}
there is a smaller bracket to indicated that the figure is negative..
but u calculate the sum of the brackets { }
this is so because the A is in front of the S. of which the A stands for addition and the S stands for subtraction
-2 is a whole number.. so in this case it is similair to -14/7
therefore -14/7 + 10/7= -4/7
and you end with the 5/2-4/7= 1/7
we find the common denominator {the number at the bottom} which in this case its 14
which changes the question to
5/14 - 4/14
therefore the answer is 1/14...
lastly BIDMAS stands for
B.. Brackets
I.....Indices
D.. Division
M.. Multiplication
A...Addition
S...Subtraction

Look at it like this:
(5/2) - ( [7/2] x [7/4] ) + (10/4)
So thats:
2.5 - (3.5 x 1.75) + 2.5
= (2.5 - 6.13 + 2.5) = -1.13
So the answer is -1.13. I think this is right, Hope it helps.

20 / 8 - 49 / 8 + 20 / 8
- 49 / 8 + 40 / 8

multiplication first then the rest
5/2 - 49/8 + 10/4
convert to the same denominator
20/8 - 49/8 + 20/8
= -9/8

work out the fractions first = 2.5 - 3.5 x 1.75 + 2.5
then do the multiplication = 2.5 - 6.125 + 2.5
then do the addition/subtraction = -1.125
i just find it easier that way but you could do the multiplication first if you wished

=(5/2+10/4)-(7/2x7/4)=(10/4+10/4)-(7x7/2x4)=20/4-49/8
=5-6+1/8=minus one and one eighth

My brain hurts too much to do the math - long day - however I cant think that it is multiplication first else it would be BOMDAS
