I have five grandfather hickory trees. They are beautiful and would never dream of cutting them down. But this year they are dropping thousands of nuts all through the yard. Mowing has become hazardous. How can I efficiently get them up off the ground? And once collected, can I do something with them besides just throw them out?

Thank you!

You need a rolling nut pickerupper which is also sold as a golf ball recovery roller or similar names. It is a coiled spring on an axle and you roll it along and the nuts (balls) are forced between the coils and collect inside and you dump them out the end.
Call around, you might be able to sell them. Check under Nuts- Wholesale.

I have heard that when trees start throwing out excessive amounts of seeds, cones or nuts that they may be in some sort of distress...Maybe you should start by having an arborist take a look at them...or maybe they could just be responding to drought.

As far as collecting the nuts: I always used my heavy duty rake and two small children to collect the nuts in buckets. Sadly, we just put them in the yard waste bags and shipped them off to the dump.

You could always rake them up before you mow, than get a fancy jar and fill it up with them. If you like the look, you could always get some more jars and put it in other places around the house.

You could try using a rake to get them up, and once you've gotten them up, you could try taking them to a flea market, or something like that. A lot of people use nuts like that to make crafts and stuff. So, try that! =]
