The speed gun works on the basic speed=distance traveled/time taken principle. It actually is a very fast camera which calculates the exact time taken by the ball after leaving the bowler's hand and reaching the batsman. It already knows the distance between both. In case of movement it recalculates that much of distance. Then it applies the formula to get the speed in either kilometers per hour or miles per hour.

Officially the fastest ball bowled in the history of the game after invention of the modern speed gun is in excess of 160 kph by shoaib akhtar. Lee is third as Jeff Thomson is the second fastest before Lee.
