No chance.Grass and hard courts demand speed and aggressiveness whereas clay courts demand patience.Federer is fast and aggressive whereas Nadal is patient. So the grass and hard courts suit Federer whereas clay courts suit Nadal's style of play. That is why Nadal always manages to beat the no.1 seed in the French open and almost all other titles on the clay.
All of us know that Federer is far ahead of Nadal in terms of points. So,simply by winning on the clay surfaces it is not possible for Nadal to be the no.1 seed by the end of the year.
But recently,Nadal has improved his game on other surfaces too.He has managed to give Federer a tough fight at the wimbledon 2007 finals at the grass surface and may continue to give Federer tough fights in the future. So he may become the no.1 seed but definitely not in this year.

I'm a big fan of Nadal but I don't think he'll be #1 this year or next year. Federer would have to lose a lot of points for Nadal to advance. The only way Nadal can move up is by winning the other three grand slams. That's the only way Nadal can earn enough points and for Federer to lose that many points. There are other big tourneys out there but they don't give as many points as the ones you earn from a grand slam.

As much as I love watching Nadal punish his opponents, winning title after title, I don't see him finishing No. 1 in 2007. Federer is a more complete player by far. Rafa is still young, and is striving to make bigger improvements. Rafa can improve more by playing more on fast surfaces. He's become dynamic on grass, but he's still suspect on the hard courts. It will be interesting to see how he plays in Montreal and Cincy this year. It might just tell the tale of what will happen at the U.S. Open. He's still got a great shot to win it. As long as he believes, Rafa can do anything he puts his mind to. If he does become No. 1, it will likely happen sometime within the next 2 or 3 years.

No, unfortunaetly; because that guy Federer is ahead in the ATP rankings by more than 2,000 points and the next Grand Slam is the U.S. Open; not the best place for Nadal

I think Nadal will be #1 in 2008. He will win French Open, Wimbledon back to back and maybe US Open. Federer days are counted. Nadal is only 21!!!!!!!! Nadal will be #1 for many many many years to come.
Federer will be a has been.

He still needs to win a slam on hardcourt first. The furthest he's gone in the Australian and US Opens is the quarter finals. If he can play better there, he'll be no. 1 soon enough. We've seen how much he's improved on grass at Wimbledon, and he continues to dominate on clay. By the end of this year? No. Federer won the Australian open without dropping a set, and he's expected to perform well at the US Open in October. But soon enough, Rafa and Federer will be trading their places in the rankings.

This year it is ruled out, even if he wins the US Open. I doubt
he can win the US Open and more importantly, Federer is
way ahead of Nadal in points(7290 vs 5455).
In order for Nadal to become #1, he needs to win many more
tournaments and also beat Federer.
Only places 3,4,5 (in 3000s ) and 6,7,8,9 and 10 (in 2000s)
compete this year and move up or down based on their plays.
