Go to a farm supply or agriculture supply store and see if they have a product called Acephate 75. It kills every bug known to man, but it smells horrible. Either mix it in a sprayer and spray it on the ant beds, or sprinkle the powder on the ant beds, leave it overnight, water it in the next day, and once it's dry it should be safe for the kids to play. We use this liberally in our yard. Great on fire ants too.

Or, if you want something absolutely safe, use boric acid. It's usually called Roach Away, Roach Pruf, etc., and there used to be a cleanser called Borax that had it. It's completely safe to use around food, kids, and pets.

You won't cure your problem until you take out the queen. I.E. Colony
I can tell you how to get rid of fire ants but you need to consider what kind of ant it is. Also I no longer have a license for pest control and by law shouldn't tell you so if some weird thing happens don't sue me.
anytime you put out a poison it can be dangerous for kids and pets so don't be misled. Practice sanitary control and good clean up.
You know those diazanon or dursban granules you buy spread out and they don't work. That's because the ant dies before he makes it back to the queen so she is safe. Buy a bag of either and a small hand crank spreader. Cut a stick about the size of your little finger straight and clean.
Poke one hole from top to bottom in the ant hill. You can feel the galleries break as you push through them. Do not wallow out the hole or cause any more distress to the ants or they will just move. Pour about half to one cup of granules down the hole. no water. Check back on the next day and see the results. It may take a few days to get them all and also re dos. Once a month take your spreader and set it on three and scatter granules over your lawn and water.
That should take care of it but I never said that. E-mail a description of the ant it can make a difference. What's in the yard trees bushes bare dirt?
Anyway hope that helps.God Bless!

Baby powder! Just sprinkle it on the ants and in about 10 minutes they're dead. It suffocates them.
