A ball is thrown upward at a velocity of 5 meters/second. Gravity pulls it back down (decelerates it) at a rate of 9.8 meters per second per second. An equation for the height, x, of the ball above the ground as a function of the time, t, since it was thrown is:

x = -4.9 * t^2 + 5 * t

Some time after it is thrown up, it will be exactly 1 meter above the ground (x = 1). (Actually, there will be 2 such times...once on the way up, and a second time on the way down.) Solve the quadratic to find those two times, t:

1 = -4.9 * t^2 + 5 * t
0 = -4.9 * t^2 + 5 * t - 1

You can solve the quadratic for t to find the answer(s).

The quadratic function is for maximizing and minimizing. It's good for business if you know the details of business.

They also are essential for physics, which is the ... formula, sorry I didn't learn any physics, so can't tell ya.

Another real life application would be homework =D.

0 = h + vt + 0.5gt2
where h is starting height, v is starting velocity up, and g is gravity, negative for down. Solve for t time when thrown or shot object hits ground (0)
