When I was younger I never found a satisfying answer about what it means to judge someone. The commentary in the Bible I was using said that to judge someone is to usurp God's role as judge, but I don't see how any human being who's not capable of kicking God off His throne is capable of usurping God's role as judge.
I can look up what I think I remember, so if you'd like me to give a precise quote, please post a comment asking me to do so.

don't judge people to find the right ones to associate with. If u judge them, u won't really know who they are, only who they appear to be through a judgemental view. Who a person is goes much deeper and takes more time to know than what you first see

I think that using the word "judge" implies that you make an opinion of someone before you actually know them. That is prejudice and stereotyping-which is wrong of course. If you get to know someone and find that they are an unlikable person for whatever reason, then it is reasonable that you do not spend time with them. But-if you will not be friends with people of another race, religion, ethnicity, background, culture or lifestyle just because it is not your own, then that is being prejudiced and bigoted which of course is wrong. My two cents.

Own protection would be possible only when self is judged and not others. So far association is concerned, it is not in the hand of self ! well how far good we can extort from associates there the beauty lays, and this is only possible if the self has been judged truly.

Sure, it is vital that we judge the people we allow in our lives. But to judge in that respect and to judge and then degrade, put down, humiliate, ostracize someone that we don't have in our lives, will never be there or you don't want in your life is wrong. It takes all kinds to make up this world. In order to determine who is best for us in our life we need to judge people, but those we choose to not let in we should just keep our mouths shut about.

from my opinion, judging (prejudice) is not wrong. As Human always wants best. If you go to market, you will look after different brands of same product. In the same way its not wrong to judge others.

Certainly we have to decide if a person or place would be safe for us to be around. That's necessary for our own survival. We still have to use common sense when we do this. If we dont want to be someone's friend solely because they're the wrong color or they dont have enough money, I think we'd miss out on a lot of very nice people.

"Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder".Same way, each person has the right to pass his/her own judgement about a particular individual. No,its not wrong to judge someone.Actually,we all do it in our sub-conscious mind.
When we see a person,we immediately pass a judgement on his looks, later on his behaviour pattern and yet later on his personality as a whole. We may be right or wrong.
While passing judgements, unintentionally we compare him to our own behavioural patterns, likes and dislikes.Tht's the reason why at times we don't like a person whom others are crazy about.Often we wish to associate with ppl who are similar to us in one way or the other. Its an in-born instinct.
Each one of us has the right to form his/her own opinion about a person and yes,its for our own protection. Its our mind's mechanism which works in order to keep undesirable personalities away from us.After all, what's wrong in selecting the kind of people we wish to associate ourselves with ? We are not GODS to encompass one and all, rite? So,stop feeling guilty and keep judging ppl as u like it,dear ! :-)

The Bible says God is the only one to judge. But it seems that everyone does it. I am a Christian that stands by the Bible, so I try my hardest not to judge.

I think it is positive to hang around people who don't do drugs and aren't violent or of a poor moral character.
But God is the ultimate judge.
