Gossipping oftens ends up with a dilemma similar to yours. For the most, it is a hard thing for people to get over. A lot tend to harbor a prolonged dislike for a person, even if he or she was a close and dear friend. Unless your friend can prove his or her innocence, then go by the old saying of, "time will heal" and allow the process to mend itself. Be of good cheer, forgive, and learn to move on. It is a lot healthier that way, both physically and mentally. Be blessed for thy good works !

You should probably talk to the blamer, and let him/her know that your friend is innocent. You may also want to talk to your other friends, to let them know that your friend is not to blame. In these types of situations, talking to people is the best way to resolve a problem, especially since this seems to be a misunderstanding.
