How can I prevent from being discriminated against? I feel that I was rejected a position to work at a store because of the way I dress/religion and not because of the qualities that are required for the job. During the interview I said I was neat, organized and that I complete every task without procrastination. I also said that my #1 priority is the customer’s happiness and that they have a pleasant shopping experience at the store. What did I do wrong to be rejected a position where I'd have to restock shelves or work as a cashier. Is there anything I could do to prove it?

I'm confused about why you think your religion played a role when you did not disclose how your potential employer was even aware of what religion you follow. I must assume it was based on your appearance.

While discrimination based on belief is a crime, discrimination based on appearance is not. Dress codes are often a factor in working in retail. People who work for "THE GAP" wear blue polo shirts. My boyfriend works for Macy's and must wear a black shirt and black pants each day for work. If you were wearing a hijab, a prominent cross pin or pendant, a religious T-shirt, a saffron robe, a shaved head (if your a woman), and you will be interacting with the public in a retail establishment, it is the right of the store manager or owner to set dress codes that do not imply either endorsement or rejection of any religion.

By the way, I'm not certain why this question was placed in the LGBT section.

During the hiring process it's very, very hard to prove discrimination. There probably isn't really much you could do to prove it.

What exactly makes you feel you weren't hired because of your religion?

Unless they made specific comments, it's almost impossible to prove. It's more likely they chose a different candidate for any of a bunch of reasons.

Honey, with an attitude like yours and your work ethic as well as how articulate you are, I'm positive the reason you weren't hired is because you would have made everyone else including the interviewer look shoddy.

The way you are telling the story, it doesn't seem like you can prove it.
