The flapper (part that lifts when you flush) is leaking. When enough water goes into the bowl, the toilet thinks it has been flushed and the fill-valve opens to add water. Flush the toilet and while it is refilling, pour a couple cups of coffee (liquid only, no grounds) into the tank. (food coloring can stain the inside of the tank). Watch the water in the bowl for a while. If the color of the water changes, you have a flapper leak. This can easily be replaced. You can also shut off the water supply, flush, and then clean the bottom of the flapper and the seating surface under it to remove any calcium deposits that may have collected on them.

I agree with the earlier answer that suggested a leak.
But I have a question. Do you have a pet? Don't laugh. I saw a video of an animal that pulled down the handle to flush the toilet just to watch the water whirl.

More and likely your toilet is leaking.
Get some liquid food coloring lift up the porcelain lid and place a few drops of red coloring in the water. Go back a few minutes later. If you see red coloring in the bowl. The rubber is leaking water.
Try shutting the water off. Take Vaseline and rub underneath the rubber part. Best to drain toilet so it semi-wet.
Turn water back on. Good luck.

sorry i dont know toilet plumbing jargon so i'll try to explain as best i can....i think ur problem lies within the pump thingie located inside the toilet top part....most likely its hooked on sth or it's stuck and not exactly moving as it should or in this moving once water the tank is filled. Just give the tank a looksie and if ur still scratching ur head call a plumber lol lol

Replace the entire valve system inside the tank. They come in a kit you can get from the local hardware store. Just follow the directions and you should be done in 30 minutes and about $10.00. This will take care of the problem. Good Luck

It's most likeley the flapper seat. The rubber seal that connects the tak to the bowl. You can purchase just a new one of those or an entire new tank system. I would reccomend an entire tank system, it isn't that much more expensive. Just make sure that the system you buy has the valve, the flapper, and the tank seat seal. Good luck!

It is likely a poltergeist - probably a kid drowned in that toilet and is signalling you to be careful....or the water level is dropping (maybe because of a slow leak) to the point where the float valve sinks to the point of flushing...but how does your flapper valve plug get out of the socket? That is the question, my perplexed friend.

Adjust the float, this will cause an unexpected flushing when no one is using it. Sometimes setting it at a different tank level will correct the problem. Try different settings. Good Luck
