in religion it may be a good idea; but i peronaaly hasnt seen polygamy as a good practice. this is where children of different mothers are subjected to mutual envy and jealousy among themselves. this is a practice where wives are not in "good terms" with one another no matter the pretence. this is a practice which has constantly subjected the man to confusion. you cant serve two masters...
polygamy... is a silence battle field!

Islam clearly allows it because it was created in a male-dominated and patriarchal society. If you do not live in a patriarchal, sexist society then polygamy does not apply, even if you are Islamic. There is a difference between something being allowed and something being necessary or required. Being that most people have a hard enough time finding a date without all the best people marrying more than one person, then I think polygamy is hardly a good idea in our society. Not to mention that polygamy almost always means a man with more than wife, and never the other way around. Certainly that is not a good move, even if you don't think it is immoral.

Islam is a phoney religion made up to compete with Christianity about a thousand years ago. They also believe that if you kill for Allah you will go to heaven and have 72 virgins at your beck and call. Is that adolescent or what? Polygamy is all about preference. There are women who think it is fine to have more than one husband, or to have a husband and close male friends. There are men who dream of having more than one wife but would not be able to handle that reality. If a man or woman wants more than one spouse and can handle the financial, physical, and mental complications, why not? I've seen worse situations where a man has a wife and two or three other women on the side and has kids by all of them. It's the children who suffer in this situation, whereas, if he was legally married to all of the women, the kids would all be taken care of and be raised in a loving environment. Me personally, I can't imagine more than one wife, and if we are separated for whatever reason, I would never marry again. I'm too old.

polygamy [(puh-lig-uh-mee)]: The practice of having several wives or husbands at the same time.

I looked over several definitions at dictionary.com before answering this. While some say "especially wives", they are unanimous in defining it as multiple spouses, meaning that the term applies to either sex.

Given that definition, I'm in favor of it. If it were restricted only to men being allowed to have multiple wives, then I would agree with some of the answers above mine which angrily refer to it as male-dominant and wrong. However, if polygamy were allowed equally to both men and women, I'm sure there are some people who would gladly avail themselves of the opportunity. Not everyone fits neatly into the marriage = 1 man + 1 woman paradigm.

Just for the record, I could not care less what Islam allows.

Polygamy is just an invention of men using religion to keep women oppressed.

There is a reason that the population is split about 50-50 when it comes to the sexes. If polygamy were natural the split wouldn't be even.

Polygamy is just another excuse for men to have multiple lovers, without the consequences.

I mean, the old testament had men marrying multiple women...but, that was only "ok" at the time, because of the purposes of spreading human seed through out the earth.

Which is obviously, not as necessary, anymore.

I don't think it's a good idea. Stupid men pigs!

Well...the problem is that it's always about the guys having multiple wives...why should the guy have all the perks.

If it was more equal, allowing women to have multiple male partners (polyandry) as well, I would be more ok with it...not likely to practice it, but more willing to accept it as a social possibility.

Right now as it stands, it makes women more like cows...and anything that equates me with, or references me with, animals is just wrong.

Polygamy is wrong. How can one man give all the attention his wife needs when he has more than one wife? How can a woman possibly be at peace when she knows her husband "loves" another woman? The only woman who willingly participate in polygamy are those who have very poor self-images and think they aren't worth anything.

Polygamy can be left to the people of Islam...I'm a one man woman.

I don't find anything bad about it, Polygamy. Why don't you think it in this angle, if a man is capable and is well enough to keep more than one wife happy by giving equal care and love and he is good to both, it is okay.
