The norton was a 90 day free trial, and the McAfee comes free with my internet service. My it says to check my BIOS, and I have tried to uninstall through the control panel, however it won't let me in "safe mode".

Can you go into add/remove programs? If so, try to remove both Norton and McAfee. If this is not possible run "MSconfig" and on the start-up tab, untick everything to do with either application and reboot, if it works then, remove both applications when not in safe mode. If, however, this doesn't work either, you will need to boot from your XP CD and repair windows. If you've never done that before, you say "NO" at the first request to repair windows, but select to install from new, then when it finds the current installation, you can then press "R" to repair it.

The only way you can do this is to go to Nortons site and download there UnInstall Program, If you tried to Install McAfee and you have Norton on your computer as well you have just discovered there nasty little secret.
THEY DO NOT PLAY WELL TOGETHER.

why would you have more than one antivirus software... expecially ones that you pay for! try to boot up into any mode, or restore it as far back as possible, if neither of those work, you are going to have to reinstall your opperating system and reformat your hard drive... i would suggest neither paying for norton nor macafee and getting antivir xp, its free and removes more viruses than the others, plus it doesnt lag your pc as much... ive had viruses macafee, norton and others couldnt remove, but it was able to remove them all fine, the link for antivir xp is below

Uninstall both programs. Find another anti-virus program (say, AVG, www.grisoft.com) and say your prayers. And, try and find out the blue screen message.
