Try Skype. If you both have Skype you can talk for free. If he doesn't, you can talk cheap.

I used to use something called SKYPE, until they decided to keep raising prices and incur a few hidden costs (though they are still very cheap).
But now I use VOIP STUNT.
http://www.voipstunt.com/en/index.html
Its very cheap and easy to use. If you both have the software you can call each other for free. Otherwise you pay 10euros (or equivalent) for four months free calls to certain destinations (which include UK housephones, US house and Mobile phones....etc).
After four months you can again add on 10euros for a further four months free and so on! The money that you put on is used as credit aswell, so if you call a country which isn't free (though they are all very cheap) the credit will roll out of that 10euros you added.
Basically go to the site to understand it all!

With a regular telephone...landline or mobile...you do the following:
Dial 011 to get out of the USA
Dial 44 (country code for the UK)
Dial the local code which will normally start with 01....
and the Dial the telephone number of the person with whom you wish to speak.
Good luck.

Get a calling card as you can spend a bit of time chatting without it being really expensive.
