The problem lies within WMP. I find that using WMP for playing DVDs etc. is fine but for burning, use third party software such as Roxio or Cyberlink. The problem with WMP is that it's too sensitive around Digital Rights Software and creates these common errors. WMP 11 was supposed to correct these problems but I haven't seen any evidence of it yet as I have just purchased Roxio Copy and Convert as WMP doesn't recognise DVD Rs and DVD ReWs but Roxio's software recognises all formats. Cyberlink make good software but Roxio is cheaper and software from both are available from Amazon.

Apart from the actual corrupt CD or drive errors or associated software driver problem; do not connect to internet while you are using Media Player. I found this problems annoying so many times. If you are running an older version of Windows Media player, your PC connected to internet, and you start burning a file which is supported by Windows Media player, immediately it will ask you to upgrade to the latest version and will not let you finish the task.

Otherwise, as some has pointed out in their response, it should be a file formatting problem. There is no standard extension names which are patented. Therefore, any one can use a similar extension to store a file of entirely different format. Your software is bound to get cheated by looking at the extension but when actually start burning or opening find it difficult to read the format.

90% of all burning errors are caused from poor quality, or speed or the wrong format.
Why users fool with the software that comes with there computer is a mystery to me.
Why fool around with poor software as well, Roxio is the leader in burning software that is affordable, especially if you do a lot of burning.
You will also find that using CD-R and DVD-R are the most widely recognised and used.
Don
Be sure that your burner will handle the latest high speed media.

Try updating the software to version 11 which was released quite a while ago - However this seems like a driver issue.
Try updating drivers in Device Manager.
