who has the jurisdiction? is it the council? the land owner? is there some kind of process you have to go through to get it authenticated?

I've just come across a ruler in my office which is a promotional one from a company in strawberry street- Hull- got me thinking....

I think you are in England, so I don't know how they do it there. Here in the USA in a town it is the Board of Selectmen that decides what name to be used. If you know what you want to name a street, you can submit it to them, but they don't have to use it.
I lived on a street that had to be renamed for safety reasons. There was a lot of debate as to what to name the street, so out of jest I suggested HARMONY LANE and wrote a letter as to why I thought that would be a good name. The Board of Selectmen approved it and that is the name of the street today.

I think it depends. I teach in a small town that got 911 service a few years ago. There were some street names, but the ones that didn't have them were named by the people that lived on the street. In other cases I think it's the people who plotted out the town. In the case of number streets, I know they just add on as new streets come to be. For others, I believe our city council/city manager does it.

Well most street names have been developed throughout history so you are just born into the city and voila there is already i doubt mayor's pick the names for cities well the answer is the names are developed over the years and centuries.

I don't know, but I wish they would make them a little shorter, we have Patrick Allan Fraser street here, just a nightmare to write down when I'm at work and in a rush! lol

Sometimes council, sometimes land owners and sometimes it is from way in the past according to what the land was used for.

me, the chief councillor i look through the dictionary and pick out a random word, me first choice if final, i called a street in gloucestershire- flood lane
