There are barter systems up and running in So. OR right now. The problem with them has always been that the member merchants universally need cash. They have mortgages to pay and kids to raise.
They don't need whatever the other member merchants are selling, and certainly not at the price the other member merchant is offering the product.

For example, if I need carpeting I want to shop for the type, style and price I want/need from several different sources and choose the best for me. If there is a member merchant who sells carpet, it's probably not the kind I want and certainly not at the price I want to pay.
I'm using the word price even though it's barter because it amounts to the same thing.

Then, above and beyond all else, I have to pay a percentage to the barter group. Automatically I loose. There is no incentive for me to use the system. Then, I have to pay a monthly fee for this too? Boy.....

So, to get one started, overcome those objections and you have a winner.
