the builders renewing our sewer drains discovered a split storm drain or a drain for a spring...no-one knows , its leaking water constantly, our insurance wont pay up, the water company wont take responisbility and no-one, not even the land registry know of this pipe. does this mean that we have to foot the bill for any repairs/ investigation??? what can we do, we are at a dead end and looking at a big bill :(

fixing it ourselves is impossible, the bill would be in the thousands, the pipe is blocked somewhere else, which caused the burst.

Get it repaired, but keep the bill separate. A bit of investigation should shed some light on where it goes to or comes from...

One thing though, if it's on your property it's your responsibility; same as the water supply pipes and drainage & foul pipes.

An easy solution would be to block it up. It will cause a problem for someone eventually, then *they* can pay for the repair.

there are 3 types of drains...foul ..storm ..and land drains ..in some councils the foul drain only takes sewage but in most you can have a combined..it takes storm as well as foul ..especially in ground where there is a lot of clay and the land does not drain well in soak aways ..then there is land drains ..these do just that .they drain the ground ..very common in Victorian times ...sounds like they have found a land drain ..you can all ways get it analysed... if these builders were not such money grabbers ..they would have joined the pipework together and finished the job ..and if they had said ..you cant do that !..tell them yes you can as long as you fit a trapped gully to stop smells ..as it is only water and there are no solids

Hi we have had a simlar problem but in our case we own our house but pay groundrent and if ur property is leasehold like mine the company which u payu ur ground rent to could be liable for the bill. i read the contract from our ground rent people and they where liable for pipes and drains and for keeping your propery safe from harm from any of the above. I had to claim from there insurance. hope this helps you

i think u need to go to citizens advice bureau they will be the best help for this
