Spain had a very large Empire in the Caribbean and South America. Cuba was just part of this. The reason initially that Spain had this Empire was the search for gold and other riches. They also sought to carry the Roman Catholic Christian faith to the people living in the area.

Cuba was used as something of a launching pad for other expeditions into the other parts of the New World. Cortes' expedition to the Aztecs came from there, and I would imagine (though I'm not sure) Pizarro started there too.
