There is a fine difference of meaning here! When you spit, it is a conscious action. When you drool, you are unaware you are doing it. Hence, 2 different names!

Have you ever heard of onomatopoeia? Well, i think it could be this. the word spit sounds like the action of spitting, you know the way it suddenly comes out of your mouth. but drool is slow o come out and kind of creeps out of your mouth, as the word drool does.

Drool.....(noun) saliva running from one's mouth....(verb) to water at the mouth, salivate, drivel.
So you see, if you told someone that at night you spit, it just wouldn't sound right. They each mean the same thing. While you're at it, you might wanna check into one of those moisture proof pillow protectors. Ya know, just to keep your drool/spit form ruining your pillows.
