The sky is blue because as light (with all colors intact) enters our atmosphere, it collides with the oxygen and nitrogen atoms, and the color with the shorter wavelength is scattered more by this collision. Because violet and blue are the shortest wavelengths the sky appears to be violet / blue. Red has the longest wavelengths of light .

During the day the sunlight (uv) reflects off the molecules in the air and creates the blue look where as at night the sun is not out the sky is black due to no reflection taking place
