Some dictionaries say elementary or primary school kids are called pupils, and others say students. Any difference between countries?

I'm from England, either really i dont think it really matters. But, i think we generally use pupil for primary school age,(roughly 7- 11 year olds) Then they use the word student more for secondary school.( roughly 11-18 year olds )

Most people in my country (U.S.), use the word "student", but either is correct and acceptable. However, I think pupil is more used in private study, like under a tutor.
