Many Hindus believe that the presiding deity of this Kali yuga is Lord Muruga (Kali Yuga Varadan). Murugan is a popular Hindu deity among Tamil Hindus, and is worshiped primarily by South Indians in India. He is not quite so well-known in other parts of India. Like most Indian deities, He is known by many other names, including Kartikeya ( son of Krittika), Arumugam (one with six faces), Kumaran, Shanmukha, Skanda, Swaminatha and Subramanian. The poet Nakeerar of the Sangam Age sang many songs in praise of the Lord, among them the well known composition "Tirumurugartrupadai" which describes the six most important abodes of Lord Muruga (Aarupadai Veedu).-

Ayyappa or Hari-haraPutra is the divine avatar as a consequence of the union of Lord Mahavishnu's Mohini avatar and Lord Siva. This avatar of Harihara- putra was necessary to destroy the evil demon Mahishi. Lord Ayyappan's temple is situated here in the midst of 18 hills. The area is in the Sahya hilly regions of Kerala bordering Tamil Nadu. The temple is situated on a hilltop at an altitude of 1260 m/4135 ft. above mean sea level, and is surrounded by mountains and dense forests.
