Photography had a HUGE! impact on society. Before photography people of course could capture a person's image through a portrait but they were expensive to make and not readily available to everyone. Photos too were expesinve at first but as the technology improved and cameras became better they have become so accesable to people today that most everyone who has a cell phone has a camera phone.
People in the past rarely had images of loved ones that had died. Today many of us I'm sure have shoe boxes full of old family photos.
Photography also had a huge impact on news. Before photos people could read a newspaper about an event but had no image of it. Today we can see through photos parts of the world people in the past could never have even imagined visiting.
Photos of important events in the past are invaluable to us today because they are literally captions of the past an embodiment of an event.
In whole I believe that photos affect a society's memories and perceptions of the world.

Photography has only existed for (roughly) 160 years. So for the whole of human history before that did not have the technology. There were many different societies in that time and many different ones since so your question really is too wide to permit of answer. All I would say that here in the UK in the past 10 years or so photography, via CCTV, has meant that we have become a society where citizens are under constant surveillance. For example, number plate recognition cameras means that a car journey can be tracked from one end of the country to the other.

You can get fined now for being on a picture and being in the intersection when the light is red.....lol
Photos say more than people arguing, which is why I love photos so much.....
They can capture a moment of joy, or a moment of outburst, but saved forever for everyone to cast judgement on, speculate on, or ridicule......
Photos are the end of the 20th century, today there are photos on every minimart, hand held phone, and traffic light.
Now, if it isn't photoed, it isn't real. Much the opposite of back before photos......If you weren't there, it didn't happen......
