I noticed elena torch-worked her glass, and thought she might be able to help?

Charles C is right -- the air mixture is important. I think most glassblowers in the scientific world use propane. Hydrogen can be used but requires special equipment and training. MAP (methylacetylene-propadiene) gives a very hot flame but I bet it is a smoky one.

More important than what gas is getting the fuel air mix right to reduce the unburned carbon. map does burn a little cleaner though. I am not an expert though. I do remeber having to make some of my own glassware in chemistry class. That was often more fun than the chemistry.
