thanks for the advice so far everyone. i don't think that i have a virus because every so often the virus scan will finnish without the computer turning itself off, and it shows no virus's.
i can't use system restore either because i have had this problem for some time which goes past the last system restore available.
the problem is getting worse all the time, i think i will eventually have to buy a new computer.
one last thought does anyone know if you can get the computer to diagnose where the fault is and tell you, how to put it right.

If it has slowly been getting worse could be to much dust inside your tower try cleaning the dust off your heat sink and your fans as this will cause it to get hot and slow down and even shut off. If this dont work try doing what that other person said good luck

Udate your antivirus and scan your coputer in safe mode. After you remove virus, I recommend you use firefox browser. It is safer than IE. It can prevent viruses such as worm, trojan and etc. The newest official edition of firefox can be downloaded from http://www.mollzia.com

your pc has probably caught a virus, i would recommend that you restore your pc using the restore disk that came with your pc,
to do that, put the disc in the drive, turn off the pc, turn it back on, follow the instructions on screen.

Have you tried a system restore?
Maybe give that a go, if it doesn't work e-mail me and we'll come up with something else.
Good luck.
