Not much chance of a summer this year. The odd nice day perhaps but no settled period of fine weather .The high jet streams that usually are between Iceland and Greenland and which causes the high pressure over the Azores to cover Britain and West Europe and give us our fine weather , these streams are much further south this year leaving us in a low pressure area of cloud and rain .Apparently this will not change until 2008, and not even then perhaps. This sort of summer might become the norm. Eastern Europe has unusually hot dry weather this year. The reason for all this is believed to be higher sea temperatures in the Pacific off the coast of Peru, which affects La Nina(a sister of El Nino) and the air movements around the globe.. All part of global warming .

not global warmer, it is cooler sea temps off peru and this is a cycle that varies every 1-5 years, hence the el nino years, which pushes weather out globally.

back to the uk, we are probably stuck with it for the summer, as the until the seasons change globally, the air stream wont move much.

Our rain and storms will get worse over the next 2 months as air and sea temps rise through the summer.

Twelfth Night (W. Shakespeare) Act 5 Scene 1

When that I was and a little tiny boy,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
A foolish thing was but a toy,
For the rain it raineth every day.

But when I came to man’s estate,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
‘Gainst knaves and thieves men shut the gate,
For the rain it raineth every day.

But when I came, alas! to wive,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
By swaggering could I never thrive,
For the rain it raineth every day.

But when I came unto my beds,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
With toss-pots still had drunken heads,
For the rain it raineth every day.

A great while ago the world begun,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
But that’s all one, our play is done,
And we’ll strive to please you every day.

“St Swithin’s Day, if it does rain
Full forty days, it will remain
St Swithin’s Day, if it be fair
For forty days, t’will rain no more.”

It rained on 15th July - St Swithins Day, so we are in for 40 days and 40 nights of rain!

Legend of St Swithin
St. Swithin was an early Saxon Bishop of Winchester who died in 861 AD and legend says that as he lay on his deathbed, he asked to be buried in the common graveyard, “where the rain would fall on him and the feet of ordinary men could pass over him.” For nine years, his wishes were followed, but then, the monks of Winchester attempted to remove his remains to a splendid shrine.

The work began on July 15th, but it couldn’t be finished then, or for many years afterwards. Torrential rains prevented it on the first day and these continued for forty days and forty nights. It was said that St. Swithin, who had detested any outward display or ostentation, was weeping in protest.

The countryside was flooded and the monks beseeched St. Swithin to intercede for them. It’s said that he appeared to one of his monks and revealed to him how displeasing it was to God to spend their time in useless expenditures of time and money which might easily be spent with more advantage in the relief of the poor and needy; he also forbade the monks to ever interfere with his remains thereafter.

In AD 963, the work on the mausoleum was finally completed, but, by then, the legend of St. Swithin as a rain-saint was firmly established.

Oddly enough, while most of us would rather not see rain on July 15th, apple-growers hope for it on this day, as well as on the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul (June 29) for it is believed that the saints are watering the crops. If they fail to do so, the apple-crop will be a poor one. Furthermore, no apple should picked or eaten before July 15th and all apples growing at this time will ripen.
