I thought that the Ivy League schools were just the best most high standard schools, and considering that Stanford is one of the best, I'm surprized that it is not an Ivy League School. Is it not as good as the eight Ivy Leagues or does the "Ivy League" mean something different? Also, does wether the school is east coast or west coast matter when it comes to how good it is?

Ivy League isn't a league made of best schools in USA. As we know those schools ARE the best(every year in top 15), but the principle is different.

The moto of Ivy League is related to athletics: Student-Athletes need to excell outside classroom as much as inside of a classroom. Bassicaly, it meant the a student-athlete cannot join those schools without good academic background. This moto ensured that invested effort in any student would pay off.

You should also know that the Ivy League was meant to be a league of North-Eastern schools, which Stanford for example isn't.

Finally those 7 schools+Cornell (which is little younger) are way too older than Stanford (between 150 and 200 years). If you combine location and age it all goes against Stanford.

No, the Ivy League isn't just the best schools. It is an athletic conference, made up of a group of East Coast schools, many of which have remained excellent schools. However, it therefore doesn't include a number of other schools which may be just as good. MIT, for example, is NOT an Ivy League School. Nor is the University of Chicago, or Stanford, or a lot of other excellent schools, either because they didn't exist at the time the league was formed, or because they are not in the geographic area of the League.

The Ivy League is a set of eastern schools that all have a good reputation. Ivy League schools are not the top eight schools. MIT is near the top and it is in the East but it isn't an ivy league school either.

Most of the best schools are in the East. But, California and Chicago have also drawn some. Get the U.S. News and World Report College Ranking. It used to be online but now you either have to pay or go to the library.

Because the Ivy League is an old football league. Really, that's all it means. It happens to contain some of the best schools, but definitely not all of them.
