Che was born in Argentina and was trained as a medical doctor. A book was published of the trip he took before his final year as a medical student and its called the motorcycle diaries. In there, it shows the journey that give some insight into his derivation of how a country should be and his interpretation of Marxism.

He aided in the cause of Castro by overthrowing the 'puppet' government in Cuba. Later, he went to Bolivia to fight with the revolutionists. He was captured and executed in Bolivia.

He is famous because of his willingness to fight for the cause. It is probably beyond any political concept and he is symbolising the true spirit of fighting against all odds in what is a person's belief.

Che Guevara became a symbol for Thirld World liberation from colonialism at the time of the Cold War. The famous picture we see everywhere today was first shown publicly a few months after his death, when French students carried huge posters during the May-'68 anti-Vietnam war demonstrations.
Che had became a hero at the time of the Cuban Revolution in 1959. Later, Castro sent him to represent Cuba at international conferences, from China to Yugoslavia to Algiers to Egypt to the UN in New York. These travels, recorded in the world's media, turned him into a well-known Thirld World leader who spoke for socialism and against imperialism.
His speeches and other writings were published and taken as revolutionary theory for the Third World. The 1960's were not only the height of the Cold War, but also the beginnings of decolonization in Africa, and Che became an inspiration for the African movements of liberation and for Vietnam.
After he criticized the Soviet Union publicly at an Asian-African Conference in 1964, the Soviets wanted him silenced. Che was never seen again at official governement celebrations in Cuba. He disappeared from the public eye for almost 4 years, until his death was reported by the media at the end of 1967.
The disappearance had added to the mystery, and the publication of his diary, kept while fighting a guerrilla war in the Bolivian jungle, became instant news. He was killed by a special unit trained and armed by the US. The CIA's recently declassified documents (some of which you may find in the internet) further explain how proof was demanded of his identity and his hands were cut off in order to send them to a lab in Argentina for fingerprints.
The mutilation added to the myth, plus the fact that his body was missing for 30 years, and was not found until the 1990's. DNA testing was performed and then his remains were returned to his family in Cuba.

He is famous because he was killed. Che Guevera wasn't a saint, he did kill some people needlessly. On the other hand he was a revolutionary, he helped to free Cuba and tried to do so in Bolivia. He was executed be cia proxies, and because of that his legend lives on. Had he lived his life out, he probably wouldn't be half as famous.

Che was a mercenary. it would be bad, except he was a communist mercenary and that - by definition of self proclaimed "ethicians" - is good. He was responsible for the conquest of Cuba, and helped replace a corrupt regime with a regime not only corrupt but also murderous. He died when he was no longer useful- sent off into the jungle and abandoned by his "friends".
A classic example of Lenin's "useful idiot"
Why is he famous? because communist propaganda spent milions into making him famous. This way more "useful idiots" volunteer to die for the "cause" (of keeping dictators in power)
