I am a single parent with 3 small children. I don't have a degree and I don't make that much money. There is no way I could possibly go to college right now while raising my kids on my own and working full-time. The only other way I can think of to make more money to better support my family is by starting my own business. I have finally come up with a business that I think will work. The problem is, my mom absolutely thinks that I should pursue becoming a published author. Her and the rest of family tells me to forget any business plans and become a writer. My mom (who is a level-headed engineer) has a feeling that I would be published fast and that it would be a better decision for me and my kids. I am passionate about writing. I always have been. I have several articles published. On one hand, I have this business idea that I know would make money quick. On the other hand, I was born to write. I just don't want to make the wrong decision. Help!!

sweetie, WRITE. Then use the money to start your business if it is truly something that would make you happy.

You have to look at which one your heart is into more. It sounds like you're very passionate about writing. However, it's not always easy for writers to make alot of money or it can take time for the income to start coming in. The business seems a bit more solid. But if you and your kids will be ok financially while you pursue your writing career I say go for it. After all, you said you were born to write so don't let anything hold you back.

It's hard to make money off of writing. I'm not doubting your writing skills but writing a book can take years...maybe even years of rejection. I think it should be something that you could do when you have the time and resources. The opportunity will always be there. A personal business of course has it's risks but if you have a solid plan, at least it is guaranteed some return. I think you should take the road that has the bigger pot of gold at the end of it.

I'm gonna be realistic because I'm not an idealist. I would try the business if it is a proven winner and get some peoples unbiased input (maybe on Y/A) to see if it will make $$$. Then, start working on your writing when things slow down (start-up is always slow, I'm doing the same thing right now)
Keep your dream alive but support your little family first.
Good luck!

If writing is your real passion, you'll probably go farther with it.

Do what YOU want to do. Follow YOUR dream. Otherwise, you'll regret it.
