How did the government pay for things before income tax?

It's a possibility. I think we should lower the income tax a bit, raise the sales tax and eliminate property tax. But the income tax could be abolished at a federal level if the federal government would do a state-like bonded borrowing.

I favor abolishing the current income tax and replacing it with either a sales tax or a flat income tax where everyone is taxed the same percentage.

Unfortunately, with Democrats in control of Congress neither is likely to happen as they like the progressive tax, unwieldy and monolithic as it is.

Uhm...how are you gonna keep the roads open or send your kids to school, or make sure nobody's poisening our food crops or rescue boaters from sudden storms or chase, arrest and prosecute thsoe who commit murder, rape and battery plus thoiusands of other things that nobody wants to subsidise but must be subsidised or we'll have to go back to living in log cabins and huntin deer. Can you imagine 12 million people in L.A. trying to build cabins. And uhm...probably ot 12 million deer within 4,000 miles of L.A.

So, as long as our population keeps growing, we will need a means to pay for services we all need to survive but nobody wants to subsidise.

And let the grasses grow wild and free.
With no one doing the landscaping?
With the snakes lying in the bush waiting for us to pass by?
