Usually, no. Right-click the file, and select "Look Up File With Bitzi". If other people are saying it has a virus, or if no one has said anything about it, it is most likely a virus.
If it has a far lower size than it should, like "37.5 kb", it is invariably a virus, Most programs have several megabytes.

It is a risk you are going to take since programs can be binded with viri, trojans, and keyloggers. If you need to do this I would suggest atleast scanning everything thoroughly with a virus scan before opening it!

it is a user beware situation.
You may end up with a bucket load of viruses or other nasty stuff.
Use AVG/Spybot/Ad Aware and you should be safe throw ccleaner into the mix just to be safe.
After downloading a file from any site first scan it with an upto date antivirus

Generally no. I tried several times and every time AVG told me it was a trojan or virus. After half a dozen attempts wth these results I gave it away as a lost cause.
