Where in the debate was the question asking the candidates if they felt it was fair to use their faith to justify the denial of marriage to gays and lesbians? The main candidate to answer was John Edwards, who went on to speak about the separation of church and state.

OK everyone, let's make this clear: I wasn't asking for your opinion on the matter. I just want to know where in the debate it is discussed.

CNN.com has the debate divided into 4 parts and I need to know which one to use.

The only LEGAL separation of church and state is that the state is forbidden to promulgate an official state religion. There is no other LEGAL basis for the whole debate.

Faith and morality go hand in hand. If our faith tells us it's wrong to murder the innocent or to promote what we believe to be an immoral act then we are morally bound to carry that precept into our public life as well.

Our faith also teaches us to be compassionate and that compassion should also extend to those with whom we disagree. I believe it is possible to offer the advantages of marriage without legally calling it marriage to gays and lesbians or to anyone else who wants a relationship that might not fit our normal definition of marriage.

In my opinion separation of church and state is a concept beyond legal definition. The First Amendment provides an excellent basis for relating government and religion in a legal way.

Sometimes I think people on both sides of this issue go out of their way to promote the conflict. It should never have ever been a political issue regardless of how we see it.
