I've noticed that running water from a faucet seems to calm crying babies. I've never figured out why, although I heard that some proponents of the swaddling method recommend that parents make a "shushing" sort of sound when they swaddle and rock the baby.

Thoughts?

I think it's because that kind of sound (a white noise) is similar to what they hear in the womb. I read somewhere that it is about as loud as a vacuum cleaner to unborn babies. (Which, by the way, also works for calming.) They hear all the bodily functions going on. Like the blood rushing and fluid gurgling and sloshing around. I think that's why.

It mimicks the sounds in the womb, which calm the baby.

I think it's just "White Noise" - same as they use to soften the other sounds in an area.

It just makes the rest of the background sounds more even.

(But it does seem soothing, doesn't it?)

white noise calms baby's because it blocks out other noises and reminds them of being inside of mommy
