I have a 10 gallon tank with 2 small goldfish (oranda and telescope) I know that goldfish need "10 gallons each" but they are seriously bored. I think they need another more lively fish to pep them up. Honestly they hardly use the space they have now. They have always been kind of "lazy". I had a pleco in with them until I found him dead this morning. (Any ideas on that are greatly appreciated too!) No good reason. I've only had him about 3 mo. and he was always weird. He never really seemed to do anything but hide in his cave... ALWAYS!! Anyways I'm gonna go tomorrow and get probably just one fish so I wanna make the most of it. I need some good suggestions of what will mesh well and live a long life with my goldies. Is there anything other than another goldie that will be ok with my fish? I feel like my options are pretty limited. Also would it be a problem to add another fish if I get another pleco? I want my fish to be healthy but I think they are lonely. Any ideas??

you could put any kind of tetra, read this site and click on any species, it tells you exactly what temperatures they need

The reason your fish are bored is because they don't have enough room to swim. Other active fish aren't going to make them happy, they will likely just stress them out (or get eaten). If you get a larger tank, you could add White Cloud Minnows, but not really anything else will be able to tolerate the Goldfishes' ammonia output. If you do weekly gravel vacuuming, your fish may be okay for another couple months (in the 10 gallon, they need to be upgraded regardless). The Pleco likely died of ammonia poisoning. Plecos get 2 feet long, you should never have had the Pleco in with the Goldfish in the first place. Plecos are also tropical fish that require warm water, while Goldfish are coldwater fish. You don't have room for more fish until you upgrade. Good luck!
By the way, Cories are tropical fish that shouldn't be kept with Goldfish (it is very unhealthy for them).

Here are a few ideas for you to consider after you have a larger tank:
Bristlenose Catfish
Corydora Catfish
Apple Snails
Butterfly Loaches
The thing is, goldfish are coldwater fish and most f/w fish you'll find at your local fish store are warm water fish. These two type are not compatible.
Addition: I am not sure what Alex G is thinking about, but a plecos grow to well over a foot long. If kept in a 10 gallon tank, it will experience growth stunting. Put simply, its body will stop growing, while it's innards continue to grow until it dies painfully. Nobody should recommend a plecostomus to someone with a 10 gallon tank. They should be in a tank of at least 55 gallons.
I hope this helps!

Before you buy any more fish, I'd invest in a water test kit. Check your ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates-they should be ammonia and nitrites at 0 ppm, and nitrates under 20 ppm. Anything other then that is most likely what killed the pleco, and very well could be why the goldies are acting "bored". They could be suffering from ammonia or nitrite poisoning, which would also explain why the pleco always hid-but those guys are usually more of a nocturnal fish as well, maybe he was just coming out when the lights were off. Like you said, those fish reallly do need a larger tank. So, I'd recommend not buying any other fish at this point...sorry...

You should get a bigger tank.. but I've got 2 corys with my goldfish in a ten gallon. The corys are always moving, searching at the bottom for leftovers and they're hilarious. Prior to when I got my corys, my goldfish didn't do much. I would say get cory cats. They don't bother the goldfish, but they'll make sure your goldfish isn't just sitting there, and all they're doing is scrounging around

As long as you're going to get a bigger tank, why not get a Black Moor? They're very social fish.

get a bigger tank. Yes, everybody's right, and a pleco is fine, it might have died of old age or a sickness. other possibilities are torpedo sharks, barbs, loaches, active catfish, cichlids and gouramis. However, check that they can live with the cold water
