There are serveal fantasy series out there. Alot of the ones I've read are from the D&D series (Dragon Lance, Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft, etc.) that are similar to the more serious epic tones of the Lord of the Rings.
If your looking for a series that not as serious as something like Lord of the Rings you might want to try reading the Xanth series of books by Piers Anthony. Its an older series, but they're still good. I read it years ago, waaaay back in 8th and 9th grade. Some of the stuff is a bit PG-13 in nature so if you're younger than 14 it may not be completely apporpriate.
Its a very interesting series. The realm of Xanth is a magical land full of creatures, monsters, and gifted humans shaped (intentionally) like the state of Florida with strangely named geological features like "Lake Ogrechobie" and the non-magical land of Mundania lies beyond the northern border.
The first book I read (and my favorite) was A Spell For Chameleon. It's basiclly about a boy named Bink that is exiled because the other think he does't have a magical talent, but he actually does. He encounters a girl named Chameleon (that changes between being an ugly genious and a beautiful dim-wit) that is looking for a way to stop from changing forms.
I found out that there are 31 Xanth books as of 2006. They are listed here:

The last book I remember reading back then for sure was the 7th, Dragon on a Pedestal. Each book that I read could stand alone and you didn't have read them in order because they tended to center around completely different characters and storylines, but you get a better sense of the broader picture and how the novels interconnect if read them in order.

The Thief
The Queen of Attolia
The King of Attolia
This trilogy written by Megan Whalen Turner.
More of a sci-fi fantasy...
Sabriel
Lirael
Abhorsen
This Old Kingdom trilogy written by Garth Nix.
I was in the YA/teen section when I was still a kid, not a teen. When I was a teen, I was in the historical and adult fiction section. But these two series, even though I outgrew them very young, they're still very good, still very near and dear to me.

Keepers of the Hidden Ways by Joel Rosenberg. It's a great series set in both the here and now and another hidden land. It involves sword fights and secret passage ways, and many different magical items.
