Depends on where you're going.
I've lived in Lubbock, Texas (which is West Texas.) Its flat, dusty, stinky (feedlots) and has dust storms in the Spring. Lots of the small west texas towns are very conservative, but the people are usually quite friendly, and will help you out gladly if you need a hand.
I currently live in Austin, Texas, the capital. It's in central Texas and the terrain is very different--hilly, very green, hot and humid. Its really pretty around here, and there's a ton of things to do. Austin feels alot more city-like--not as much as the Dallas-Forth Worth area or Houston, but still big enough to find stuff to do. The people around here are super laid back and very nice.
I've only ever visited the Dallas-Forth Worth area or Houston, so I have less to tell you about them. There was alot to do both places though.
Im afraid I can't compare the place to Alabama, as I've never been there.
Good Luck, and I hope you do well with your move.

Hazel,
It's like anywhere - someplace within Texas are nicer than others. However , in general:
Texas is the only state with national pride.
There's a church on every other corner, and drive thru beer barns in between.
They drive 60 mph in parking lots, and either 50 or 100 on the highway.
They are mostly very nice people unless you insult Texas, their Mother, God, or their brand of pickup, then you might get tobacco spit on your shoe.
Texans place a great deal of importance on a good meal, and thank God for that. There's a ton of good food about any place you go here. You haven't even had Mexican food until you've had it here.
There's alot of natural beauty, but it's not statewide, and what is beautiful can be very different from region to region.
It's not any hotter than Alabama in most of the state, but it's not as humid, except for Houston - which is worse. Houston gets more rain than Seattle, but it's always a few inches at a time, in between scorching sunny heat waves.
Fishing is fairly similar.
There's a ton of stuff for young people to do if you are anywhere near Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Houston, Austin, or San Antonio.
Schools are pretty decent on the average, and make a big deal about football more so than the other sports.
that's it!

It really depends where in Texas you move. Houston I would say would be the last on my list of cities in Texas to move to if I were a newcomer. There is nothing there crime rate has went up and I wanna move......It's not like it use to be, entertainment is gone ......I would say Austin is nice and San Antonio is nice .....I love Galveston ....not so much the water just the things to do there...like Moody Gardens .....The strand to shop and so forth ... Good Luck in where ever you move.

Greatly depends on where in Texas - Ft. Worth and Dallas are considerably different, even to soil types. Panhandle is at higher altitude and dryer. Houston is almost at sea level and more like Mobile and southern Alabama.
