Although he did write his own speeches, he did steal a lot from other authors. His Gettysburg Address, not word for word but idea for idea, was taken from a speech given at the dedication of an Athenian burial ground by the Greek General Pericles during the Pellopenesian Wars. His "a house divided against itself cannot stand" is taken from one of the gospels in the New Testament.

noooooo...... Lincoln was the last president to actually write his OWN speeches!!! I mean, the man carried a bevy of spare envelopes in his breast pocket just to write down things like the Gettysburg Address and grocery lists!!!! I wonder how many great speeches Mary Todd threw away cuz she thought it was trash???? Good lord... boggles the mind.
