also, what's a family friendly neighborhood that offers great rentals to students and young, single professionals?

It depends on what you consider "Austin".

There is plenty of rentals in Austin because it is a college town, and generally a very mobile population in general. It is also a generally safe town, the bad areas are pretty readily apparent. When you get here call an apartment locator service and talk to them. If they know their job at all, they should be able to find you exactly what you want (it shouldn't cost you anything to use the service, they get paid by the property owners).

I lived off of 2222 in apartments called River Lodge that were nice and there seemed to be mostly young professionals living there. It's a bit of a drive from downtown but I didn't mind it too much and they've put in a lot more stores out there (Target, etc in addition to a grocery store, HEB) so you don't have to go far for things you need.

Also, my friend lived west of Mopac off of Steck and you can find some good places in that general area (also try Far West area). Some complexes are geared more towards students but there are also a lot of duplexes and condos with older people.

Try www.city-data.com . There is a forum on that site that can and will answer any questions you may have about Austin (or anywhere really).
Good luck!
