i have a betta fish.i dont think the previous owner took very good care of it.the tank was green, they said it hadn't been fed for days. after looking at it for a while,i discovered that it has several dark spots on both sides f his body that seem to be underneath his scales.some of the spots are smaller than a grain of salt, some of them are much larger.what is this?his fins also seem to be split. and clumped together in some places.im worried about him...

The fin damage is something to watch carefully. Splits and that clumping appearance can both be from ammonia problems in the Bettas water and it sounds like he has seen his fair share of that in the past. It could also be fin rot, so watch the ares for white edging and loss of fin. If you see that, it's fin rot and should be treated with an antibiotic. I would suggest Maracyn or Maracyn TC for fin rot, just treat as the package directs.

The black dots may also be from damage form poor water quality or can also be from natural coloration. There is an outside chance it could be a disease, but more likely from poor water conditions. I would put this in the wait and watch category as well. If it gets significantly worse over time, post a new question with the new details and no doubt we'll work out the cause and treatment.

i have a beta too! well i take good care of mine, and it looks like how you described. but maybe the tank was green because there is a cemical that turns the water green, and it's great for the beta. but if it wasn't that, and you are using sink water, then i would recomend going to a pet store and talking to an employee there about health conditions for a beta. or you could go to a pet store anyways and ask if they know what is wrong and if it will be ok. hope it helps!!!

That sounds like fin and tail rot (and despite the name, its also located on the body) Buy coppersafe or some medication that treats this as soon as you can, because its deadly and in my own tanks I've seen it hit the beta's the hardest. It would make sense that he has fin and tail rot because poor tank conditions like that have been known to cause it.

If it's a bacterial or fungal infection, purchase a product called Binox (ABQ-780186 $16.49). If it's an external or internal infection, purchase a product called Fluke Tabs (ABQ-210308 $23.99). These medications can be found and ordered at http://www.drsfostersmith.com.

okay, dont worry. he is a crowntail. his fins are completely normal. and as for the spots, it just means he is kinda getting older than you would think.

Yup... I've seen this diagnoses before... he's sick! lol, but really, just take good care of him, feed him betta food everyday, give him that coppertone stuff and he should be fine
