tonight i pulled in my driveway and there were two huge skunks!! they didnt even care i was there. i have a large yukon that is loud due to the dual exhaust. it didnt even make them look. they walked along my house up to the fence and slowly went to my nieghbors backyard . we always have had skunks in the area and you can always smell them. my pits used to kill them constantly we would find them in the morning in our yard and we knew our loving dogs were only protecting there territory. is there anythine we can do to keep them out of our yard??? how small of a space can they squeeze through. i have small kids and always worry that they will come across one. i have called the city and they claim its up to us to get rid of them. please any advice!!!

That is a problem, especially because skunks often carry rabies. First of all, try to make sure that things skunks find attractive are put away; trash, pet food, spilled seeds from bird feeders, etc. Skunks are nocturnal and will usually stay away from bright lights.

They have known to be discouraged from returning by placing some coyote pellets or other predator droppings in select locations, sprinkling crushed red pepper, or using pepper sprays. They can't jump very high, so walls keep them out, but they are good at squeezing through small spaces, even as tiny as 4".

Be careful if you are out and see these skunks acting aggressive, or foaming at the mouth. Using some humane traps with eggs or chicken entrails might be your best bet.

You might try contacting your local Humane Society or SPCA to see if they can assist you in trapping and then re-locating these animals.

Dogs are the best. Mothballs work in close spaces.
