Ok, two years ago I took what I thought would be a short break from college because I just couldn't figure out what I wanted to do with my life. Now, I feel like I need to go back, but I'm no closer to knowing what I want to do than I was back then. I'm leaning toward majoring in Professional Writing, but every time I start to pay my tuition payment online I panic. Should I just account this as fear of going back to school and failing horribly at something I used to excel at, or take it as a sign not to go back? Just need some other opinions and assurances...

Yes, I think that you are afraid of facing it all, but the fact is that if you were good at it before, you will most likely be good again. Sometimes you just need to acknowledge that you are afraid and do it anyway. In the short run, avoidance feels safer, because you don't have to face potential failure, but the fact is that you aren't getting anywhere, and you won't face success that way either. Success requires taking risks. That's what you are trying to do, and it is scary. Feel the fear and move on through it.

I can tell you what I did- I went and took 1 class at the local city school, non-degree, while working full-time. I took Spanish IV (I am Puerto Rican and have worked in the language, but am from NY, so I'm not as good as people who grew up in PR). I got an A, but I really needed to take something I knew I could finish and excel at. I also helped other students in the class, which made me feel great. I did finish the minor in Spanish I had wanted to do, and took advanced literature and linguistics with native speakers. But, I started really easy and slow, making sure I would be OK. When my confidence was up, I took harder and courses and a heavier load.

I am not sure what type of college/university you attend, but I would suggest that if you are attending a university that you switch to a local community college. You would be amazed at what is available at the CC level as well as the huge price difference.

If fear of failure is a concern, look into reduced course load.

well, you can't fail if you never try, but you can't succeed either. and the chances are that you will succeed. and if you don't? you're still young enough that you've got the rest of your life to figure out what you would like to do.
