As far as epic goes there can be no other answer than Der Ring des Nibelungen (or just The Ring) by Richard Wagner. It is an epic story from Norse mythology (although great amended and changed by Wagner). A full performance will take approx. 15-16 hours over 4 days (or 4 years or however long the opera company decides to space them out). The whole piece consists of four separate operas that combine to form one story. People are know to take pilgrimages just to see this epic tetralogy performed.

I am sure Shannon S meant Mendelsohn's Midsummer Night 's Dream

Not sure exactly what you mean by Epic --

An Epic is a story of large scope. Are you familiar with the Chopin Ballades?

The Shostakovich Symphony 7 is of epic proportions and is a tribute to Russia's epic defeat of Germany druing WWII. I don't like it much myself, but it has a huge following.

Beethoven's 9th is full of drama in all 4 movements -- the monumental opening of the 2nd mvt should give you that "epic" feeling.....

Any of the Richard Strauss tone poems -- Also Sprach Zarathustra, Don Quixote, Til Eulenspiegel, Don Juan -- once again not my favorites but there ya go...

Is this the kind of stuff you are looking for??
